Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums and bone that hold your teeth in place. It’s the leading cause of adult tooth loss and is linked to heart and overall health. At Prosperity Smile in Pembroke Pines, FL, we treat it with deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), laser therapy and periodontal maintenance, plus restorations like crowns and bridges. We serve all of South Florida.

Nervous about dental visits?

Tell us up front. We take dental anxiety seriously: we slow the pace, explain every step before we do it, and adjust numbing so you stay in control the whole time.

Gum disease almost always starts in silence. Gingivitis, the early stage, shows up as red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush, and at this point it’s fully reversible. Left alone, it can advance to periodontitis, where the infection eats away the bone around your teeth and they slowly loosen. The good news is simple: caught early, it responds very well to treatment.

Once your gums are healthy again, we restore whatever was damaged. That might mean replacing failing fillings with crowns, closing gaps with bridges, or rebuilding a worn bite with dentures, so you leave with a mouth that feels healthy and whole. Every plan begins with a gentle exam and a clear, no-pressure conversation.

The process

How we treat your gums, step by step

Free consultation

We look at your gums, talk through what you’re noticing and explain your options, with no pressure. If a deeper diagnosis is needed, we walk you through it first so nothing catches you off guard.

Diagnosis & gum measurement

We gently measure the pockets around each tooth to stage the disease, from gingivitis to periodontitis, so your plan matches exactly what your gums need.

Deep cleaning / treatment

With the area fully numbed, we perform scaling and root planing, clearing plaque and tartar below the gumline, often with laser therapy for a more comfortable result.

Maintenance & restoration

We keep your gums healthy with periodontal maintenance visits, then restore any damaged teeth with crowns, bridges or dentures to finish your smile.

Gum treatment FAQ

What are the signs of gum disease?

The most common signs are gums that bleed when you brush or floss, redness, swelling or tenderness, persistent bad breath, receding gums and sensitivity. In later stages you may notice loose teeth or a bite that feels different. Any one of these is reason enough for a free evaluation at our Pembroke Pines office.

What is scaling and root planing (deep cleaning)?

It’s the standard treatment for active gum disease. After numbing the area, we remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline (the scaling) and smooth the tooth roots (the planing) so your gums can reattach and heal. At our Pembroke Pines office we often treat one or two sections of the mouth at a time for your comfort.

Is gum disease reversible?

Gingivitis, the early stage, is usually reversible with a professional cleaning and good home care. Periodontitis, the advanced stage, can’t be fully reversed because bone has already been lost. The encouraging part is that it can be controlled and stabilized with treatment and ongoing periodontal maintenance, and that is what saves your teeth.

Does deep cleaning hurt?

No. We numb the area with local anesthesia first, so the procedure itself is comfortable, and we work gently, often with laser therapy. A little tenderness or sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and easily handled with over-the-counter medication.

Does insurance cover gum treatment?

Most dental insurance covers part of gum treatment, and we verify your benefits for you. If you’re uninsured, our VIP Membership delivers real savings on gum care, and we offer flexible financing for every credit profile, so healthier gums in South Florida always stay within reach.
